About Camas
Camas Day School is an independent nonprofit school in Whitefish, Montana, formed by a group of parents in 2006. We are located directly across from Whitefish High School and Muldown Elementary School for convenient pickup and drop-off.
Camas is a small school with only 26 students on campus each day. This allows us to have a student-to-staff ratio of 6:1in the 2/3 Kintla class and an 8:1 student-to-staff ratio in the 4/5 Haskill class. Small classroom sizes enable our teachers to focus on the needs, curiosities, and social and academic well-being of each child we teach. To be eligible to attend our school, your child must turn two before the program start date they are entering.
We run two programs each year at Camas. Our school year program follows the Whitefish School District’s calendar, and this is where the bulk of our learning occurs. Our school is open from 8 - 5 pm on school days, with learning occurring from 9 - 3 pm. Camas believes play is best; learning happens when something is fun, and consistent boundaries and support help a child thrive. We spend as much time as we can outside, with three outside blocks of time set up during our day. Our learning times happen in whole group, small group, and individual settings, depending on our little learners' activities and needs.
Our summer program is a seven-week program, where we are open 9 - 4 on school days, and is based on staffing. Our summer program emphasizes outside play and walking field trips, crafts, and exploring our weekly theme. Social and independent skills are heavily focused on during these weeks. We also have A LOT of fun while we are together!
A child is not required to be enrolled in our summer program to be eligible for fall programs. We are closed the week after school gets out and the week before the next school session starts for deep cleaning, staff training, and building maintenance.
Our teachers are trained in Early Childhood Practices, offering individualized instruction in Handwriting Without Tears and Zoo Phonics programs. Yearly, monthly, and weekly planning allows our little learners the best and most intentional access to learning at their level. We strive to make learning fun and exciting for them every day.
